A. DavidData obtained by observers on board of two fishing vessels during six trips carried out between January-April 2010 to catch tuna were analyzed. Thirty-four fishing days were completed and of the 59 trawls performed 37 turned out positive (with tuna catches). The fishing gear consisted of a purse seine net. Exploitation took place within the Argentine-Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone, between 36° S-39° S. The main landings occurred in March and consisted of slender tuna, Allothunnus fallai (57%), followed by albacore, Thunnus alalunga (28.5%), in January and bonito, Sarda sarda (14%), in April. Sea surface temperature ranged 16 °C-19 °C. A total of 25 length frequency samples allowed to measure individuals of the species above mentioned and those of skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis). During fishing operations the death of some magellanic penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus) and soft-plumaged petrels (Pterodroma mollis) as well as catch of anchovy (Engraulis anchoita) were registered
Período 1990-1997(Mar del Plata: Instituto Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo Pesquero, 2003) Dato, C.V.; Villarino, M.F.; Cañete, G.R.Discards of the commercial fleet in the Argentine Sea (SW Atlantic) directed to hake Merluccius hubbsi were estimated in weight and number of individuals. The dynamics of the ice-chilling and freezer fleets per area and quarter and processes of discarding were analyzed. The estimation method was based on the comparison of landings and surveys length composition, the latter filtered by the selectivity of the mesh used by the commercial fleet to rebuild the length distribution of catches. It is concluded that discards had an annual variation of 42,000 t-148,000 t in the 1990-1997 period, which represented between 30 and 50 in weight and 11-24 in number of actual catches. The analysis of age groups affected by discards showed that over 90 corresponded to individuals age 1 and the rest to specimens age groups 0-2.
Periodo 1990-1997(Mar del Plata: Instituto Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo Pesquero, 2003) Dato, C.V.; Villarino, M.F.; Cañete, G.R.Since 1990, the Argentine commercial fleet directed to hake (Merluccius hubbsi) has obtained more than 70 of catches South of 41°S while to the North of this latitude the activity concentrated between 39°S and 41°S Argentine Sea, SW Atlantic. Bearing in mind the different characteristics of ice-chilling and freezer fleets, their activities were analyzed separately. Considering the relative percentages of catches declared in fishery statistics, the dynamics of each fleet is described per quarter and year. Special reference is made to 1997 when a closed area to protect juveniles was introduced between 44°S-47°S and 62°W-65°W. The freezer fleet activity, concentrated South of 41°S, especially South of 43°S, was stable throughout the period. It grouped around the closed area of Escondida Island during the summer 1st and 4th quarters) to disperse in deeper waters in winter 2nd and 3rd quarters. In the 2nd quarter it formed two nuclei, one to the North -and the most important- to the South of 41°S. The dynamics of the ice-chilling fleet per season was similar to that of the freezer fleetnevertheless, contrary to the latter, activities concentrated between 39°S and 42°S and, of the two nuclei formed in the 2nd quarter, the most important was the one North of 41°S. In 1995 a marked change was observed when concentration of the fleet ranged between 39°S and 42°S and the South nucleus practically disappeared.
The stripped weakfish (Cynoscion guatucupa) has a wide latitudinal distribution (22° S-43° S) and it is object of fishery in Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina (SW Atlantic). In this last country, it is mainly captured in the coastal region of Buenos Aires Province by means of a fleet, which has between 20 m and 30 m length. In Argentina, the average landings in the last 5 years were 9,900 t. It is the second commercial species among the coastal groups. There are two main fishery areas of this species: the Argentinean-Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone (AUCFZ) and the El Rincón area, in the South of bonaerense littoral. Due to the importance of this species, it is necessary to define an index of annual abundance to allow a suitable diagnosis of the fishery condition. The General Linear Model is a suitable model to calculate this index. The factors used in this work were: year, trimester, 4 length categories and 5 sub areas. All of them were significant and reflect spatial-temporal changes in the abundance of this species. The model explained 34% of the total variability in the AUCFZ and 46% in the El Rincón. In general, the trends of catch per unit effort (CPUE) were similar and increasing in both areas, registering a greater increase in the internal areas. On the other hand, the fleet displacements between the areas and the reduction of the total fishery area caused a rise in the annual CPUE and a fall of the captures. These captures were dominated by adults but with an important presence of juveniles in the coastal zone off Mar del Plata city.
- ItemEvaluación del recurso abadejo y recomendaciones sobre su explotación a partir del año 2002(Mar del Plata: Instituto Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo Pesquero (INIDEP), 2007) Cordo, H.D.Ling (Genypterus blacodes) resource was assessed by means of an age structured production model fitted with stock abundance indices from catch per unit effort data (CPUE) obtained from the commercial fishing fleet. Reproductive stock was assessed in the same way with CPUE data from the fishery research vessel. A short-term analysis of collapse risk as a function of 1999 and 2000 fishing mortalities was carried out with the results, and also a long-term analysis with the assumption of a variable fishing mortality (F) with two recruitment hypotheses. Results show that the present state of the Ling resource has worsened with respect to the last assessment. Considering the best of all cases, the Br/Kr relationship decreased from 0.55 to 0.33, indicating that the reproductive stock is near the acceptable limit assumed in this paper. Risk analysis pointed out that catch should be kept at a level of 16,000 t year-1 in the long term to maintain collapse risk within acceptable levels ( 10%). This would imply decreasing total allowable catch levels, currently at 19,000 t year-1. Nevertheless, since Ling is in great proportion, a by-catch of the common hake fishery, catch levels are regulated to a great extent by the effort directed to hake. In addition, it was observed that Ling catch by longliners increased from 137 t in 1998 to 3.088 t in 2001. This implies an increase in fishing effort oriented to Ling. From the above discussion it is inferred as necessary to limit fishing effort oriented to Ling particularly that exerted during the first quarter of the year around the reproductive area. Based on results from this and other reports, some proposals for management of the species starting from the year 2002 are indicated.
- ItemMuestreo de desembarque de caballa (Scomber japonicus) en el puerto de Mar del Plata (38° S) y determinación de niveles de captura en el área El Rincón; período 1989-2003(Mar del Plata: Instituto Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo Pesquero (INIDEP), 2007) Perrotta, Ricardo G.; Garciarena, A. David; Hernández, Daniel R.Chub mackerel caught by the commercial fleet in El Rincón (39°-41° 30’ S) and Mar del Plata (38° S) areas was analyzed. In 2001 and 2002 samples from El Rincón were obtained from landings or collected by scientific observers on board the commercial ships. Samples from Mar del Plata were acquired during the 2001-2002 and 2002-2003 fishing seasons, on board two vessels of the small purse-seine fleet. Landings were mostly adults and only a small fraction of juveniles was observed (< 5%). Length growth parameters from El Rincón samples were estimated, and length-weight and length-age relationships were fitted by Least Squares. The results were as follows: L(mm) = 538.4; k (years-1) = 0.122; t0 (years) = -4.92; Pt = 4*10-7 * Lt 3.536. Natural mortality was estimated at 0.30 and age limit at 10 years. The standardized catch per unit effort (CPUE) annual mean (kg h-1) for the 1990-2002 period was calculated by means of a General Linear Model which justified 41% of total variance. The most significant variables resulted to be the seasonal pattern of exploitation of the resource (month), and its pronounced concentration in the exploitation area (fishing position). Values of the standardized CPUE annual mean fluctuated with trends that were similar to those registered between 1993 and 2002. Due to fluctuations in the Chub mackerel abundance and the possible negative effect caused by the activity of large ships in El Rincón, a maximum annual catch of 13,000 t for 2003 is suggested for this area as a precautionary measure.
- ItemPesca comercial de merluza al sur de 41°S y estimación de índices de abundancia derivados de la flota pesquera(Mar del Plata: Instituto Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo Pesquero, 2003) Irusta, G.; Pérez, M.; Renzi, M.A.; Castrucci, R.The activity of fishing fleets for hake Merluccius hubbsi south of 41°S Argentine Sea, SW Atlantic, is described. In order to establish the standard group of vessels, density indices derived from research cruises and ice-chilling fleets were related. Group four 1,400-1,800 HP related better to the abundance trend. Also, two series of indices associated to different fractions of the population were estimated: juveniles age 2) and adults age 3-5. Finally, a total catch per unit effort CPUE for the region south of 41°S, which showed a declining trend during the period considered 1991-1997, was calculated.
The activity of the hake (Merluccius hubbsi) commercial offshore ice chilling fleet and its relation to concentration, distribution and population areas of the stock distributed between 34ºS - 41ºS is described. The catch per unit of effort (CPUE) for the 1986-2005 period was estimated applying the General Linear Model. Data derived from the offshore fishing logs provided by the Argentine Secretary of Agriculture, Farming, Fishing and Food Administration and the information obtained in research cruises carried out in 1994, 1996-2001, 2003-2005 to evaluate the resource population abundance. During the main fishing time in the sector (quarter 2) and up until 1991 the fleet scattered within the Argentine-Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone (SW Atlantic). Later on the activity concentrated south of 39ºS where catches and the nominal effort reached their maximum value to decrease northerly as a result of the depletion of stock concentration and the development of the hake fishery in the Patagonian area. The zone south of 39º S is a sector of low concentrations where adult individuals prevail and a transfer zone of the fleet towards Patagonian fishing grounds (41ºS - 48ºS). The annual CPUE estimated with the General Linear Model decreased by 49% in the study period. As of 2000 the fishery became variable as regards catches, fishing effort and operation areas and more dependent on important recruitments as a consequence of the marked decrease of adults population abundance.
