Años 1996-1999(Mar del Plata: Instituto Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo Pesquero, 2003) Hernández, Daniel R.; Bezzi, S.I.; Ibañez, P.M.Gain contribution by stratification in hake (Merluccius hubbsi) biomass estimation with respect to a simple random sampling based on the same sample size is analyzed. Considering as objective hake biomass assessment, curves which relate precision reached in estimations to the sample size are established. Data were from total hake biomass surveys carried out from 1996 through 1999 hake management units distributed North and South of 41°S Argentine Sea are analyzed separately. Stratification used at present allows to obtain very variable gains in precision associated to biomass with estimations, in the North management unit, with a maximun of 88 in 1996 and no gain in 1997. The South management unit presents also variable results but always with important gains. The applied sampling effort levels allow to obtain biomass estimation relative errors no higher than 29 in the assessment corresponding to the North management unit and 14 in the assessment relative to the South management unit. These values may be considered as very satisfactory. In the event of further diminishing estimation errors to obtain minimum gains it will be necessary to increase the sampling effort to levels which are inadmissible from a practical point of view. It does not seem feasible to diminish the present error of biomass estimation in both management units.
Período 1986-1998(Mar del Plata: Instituto Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo Pesquero, 2003) Irusta, G.; Hernández, Daniel R.The status of hake (Merluccius hubbsi) resource south of 41°S in the Argentine Sea was evaluated with the Biomass Dynamic Model of Pella and Tomlinson. Results indicate that the population was overexploited and in a low biological production level (B99 BMSY1 because, as of 1998, catches always exceeded the surplus production corresponding to each year and the (MSY) Maximum Sustainable Yield. In 1993 increase of landings accelerated declination of biomass. For 1999 the MSY was estimated at 244,773 t and the replacement catch at 147,389 t. Landings corresponding to 1998 surpassed the MSY in 145,000 t and the replacement catch in 242,611 t.
Septiembre, 2000(Mar del Plata: Instituto Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo Pesquero, 2003) Perrotta, Ricardo G.; Viñas, M.D.; Madirolas, A.; Reta, Raúl; Akselman, Rut; Castro Machado, Federico; Garciarena, A. David; Macchi, Gustavo J.; Moriondo Danovaro, Paula; Llanos, V.; Urteaga, J.R.Between September 1st and 6th a research cruise was carried out in the Buenos Aires shelf area of "El Rincon" 39°40'-41°30'S, Argentine Sea SW Atlantic. The total area studied was 2,527.8 nautical mile2. Knowledge of the commercial fleet location at the time of the survey allowed to intensify sampling in a 'miniarea' of 52,8 nautical mile2. The acoustic assessment of chub mackerel (Scomber japonicus) biomass was 49,511.9 t, 94 of which corresponded to this last area. Fish samples coming from fishing trawls included only adult individuals of 240-460 mm total length (TL) and ages ranging 2-11 years. The limit age was estimated at 13 years and natural and total mortality rates at 0.23 and 0.54, respectively. Oceanographic conditions were those typical of the winter season, characterized by the vertical homogeneity of the water column in temperature and salinity. The isotherms and isohalines distributed parallel to the 50 m isobath with values progressively decreasing from the coast towards the slope. Salinity values allowed to detect two hydrographic regimes: that of the San Matias Gulf 33.8-34.4 located to the West and covering more than half of the study area and the one of the Shelf Waters 33.5-33.79 occurring towards the East. A positive gradient in chlorophyll a concentration was observed in N-S sense and from the coast towards the shelf break. The highest densities of phytoplankton, with dominance of diatoms, were observed in the southern sector. Low concentrations of Alexandrium tamarense and Prorocentrum minimum, two potentially noxious dinoflagellates, were detected. The highest zooplankton biomass associated to the highest salinity values and salinity gradients, represented mostly by Calanoides cf. carinatus, was also detected in the southern sector. The western sector, influenced by the San Matias Gulf regime and characterized by high densities of both, phytoplankton and zooplankton, may constitute a potentially favourable feeding ground for chub mackerel.
I.; Ibáñez, P.M.Hake (Merluccius hubbsi) biomass in the Argentine and Uruguayan sectors of the Argentine-Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone (AUCFZ) and in the area that extends from the limit of the shared zone to 41° S was estimated (SW Atlantic Ocean). The contribution to the strata total biomass in each sector was analyzed and complemented with observations on the structure of the population. The basic data to estimate biomass derived from the evaluation surveys of the Hake Project carried out in winter or spring 1994, 1996-2001 and 2003. In 1999 biomass north of 41° S decreased to 30. (112,280 t) of the estimates made for 1994. In 2000 it increased to 165,000 t and in 2003 it was estimated at 156,407 t. A remarkable decrease of the AUCFZ percentage of contribution to the total biomass north of 41° S was registered. The result was an increase of the contribution corresponding to the intermediate zone that in 2003 contributed 54. of the total biomass. The modal class was equal to or smaller than 25 cm in the Uruguayan sector, between 13-37 cm in the Argentine sector and smaller than 35 cm in the intermediate zone where it reached 22 cm in 2000 and 27 cm in 2001. The rest of the years it varied between 38-41 cm. In the intermediate zone the average length and the modal class were larger than in the AUCFZ sectors.
A stock assessment of Patagonian hoki of the Southwest Atlantic was carried out by using data from the years 1985-2001. A cohort analysis, fitted with some survey abundance indices was used in an adaptive conceptual framework. Simulation trials were performed to project the evolution of the fishery, to evaluate the risk of over-fish the stock under different exploitation levels, and to estimate Biologically Acceptable Catches (BAC). Both total biomass and spawning stock biomass showed increasing trends resulting from four strong year classes (1993, 1995, 1996 and 1998). Total biomass at the beginning of 2001 was estimated to be 2.5 million tons, and spawning stock biomass at the spawning time (August) was estimated to be around 1.28 million tons. The exploitation rate was low (0.19) and showed a decreasing trend in relation to previous years. The fishing mortality rate producing sustainable total catches in the long term, i.e., BAC corresponded to yields between 160 and 306 thousand tons during 2002, depending on future levels of recruitment
A diagnosis of the current state of Southern blue whiting (Micromesistius australis) stock in the Southwest Atlantic was carried out on the basis of catches corresponding to the period 1987-2001 as reported by the Argentine fleet and also by vessels operating around Malvinas Islands. Abundance and current fishing mortality rates were estimated, and the biomass evolution in the long term resulting from some possible exploitation strategies based on different management strategies were projected. A sequential population analysis calibrated under a conceptual adjustable framework with five independent abundance indices was carried out. The effects on the biomass estimates were analysed by adopting different selection patterns and calibration indices as well as taking into account the under-declaration and discard of catches. Results indicated that the declining trend of Southern Blue Whiting observed in previous studies has continued, but it has been less marked than in preceding years. Total biomass estimates at the beginning of 2001 ranged between 566 and 622 thousand tonnes, whether the under-reporting or discards of catches by the Argentine fleet were taken into account or not. Accordingly, the spawning biomass at the onset of spawning ranged between 403 and 442 thousand tonnes. These values would correspond to 27-29% of the virgin biomass. Current fishing mortality was estimated as 0.27, corresponding to a relatively high exploitation rate (0.56). Projections aimed at four possible management objectives showed that biologically acceptable catches would range 22-84 thousand tonnes in 2002. Catches in the Southwest Atlantic should not exceed 50 thousand tonnes during 2002 in order to stop the declining trend of Southern blue whiting biomass.
- ItemMuestreo de desembarque de caballa (Scomber japonicus) en el puerto de Mar del Plata, período noviembre 2003-diciembre 2004 y resultados de la campaña de estimación de la biomasa de diciembre de 2004(Mar del Plata: Instituto Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo Pesquero, 2009) Perrotta, Ricardo G.; Garciarena, A. David; Madirolas, A.; Cabreira, Ariel G.Chub mackerel (Scomber japonicus) landings corresponding to November 2003-January 2004 and November 2004-January 2005 fishing seasons were analyzed at the Mar del Plata port (Argentina, SW Atlantic). Fourty one samples were taken to measure total length exclusively and 4 sub-samples to record individual data (total length, weight, sex, sexual stage, age according to otoliths reading). Total length ranged 20-50 cm (1 and 8 years old). The most abundant sizes, between 32-37 cm, corresponded to ages 3 and 4, respectively. Most of the fish caught were adult (95%) and mature (85%) specimens. Length-weight, length-age relations were calculated and length-growth, weight-growth parameters estimated. The catch per unit of effort, of high variability (0-2,455 kg h-1), decreased as sea surface temperature increased. To estimate the species biomass in the fishing area a research cruise was carried out between 17-20 December 2004. Measurements, obtained with acoustic methods, reached a total of 11,678 t. The highest concentrations were found at a temperature of around 17.4 ºC and salinity of 33.62 psu. During the acoustic tracking, unusual concentrations of anchovy for the season were detected.
